Mark Shechner

NotAvailableMark Shechner was a longtime English professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, a noted scholar of James Joyce and Jewish literature, and a prolific book reviewer for The Buffalo News.

He studied physics for two years at UCLA, then switched to literature, earning master’s and doctorate degrees from the UC Berkeley. He joined SUNY at Buffalo’s faculty in 1970 and served as chairman of the English department at various points during his tenure of four-plus decades. He twice served as a Fulbright lecturer on American literature.

Mark was an inveterate traveler, foodie, and music lover, with a head full of lyrics from Sinatra to The Who. He was a major fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rams, and Lakers, and the Buffalo Bills.

Mark Shechner passed away after a short illness in October 2015, as this book was being edited.
